Prof Conor Burke
Consultant Respiratory Physician in Connolly Hospital, the Mater Hospital and UCD
Professor Conor Burke graduated from UCD and is currently a Consultant Respiratory Physician in Connolly Hospital and the Mater Hospital and University College Dublin. He completed a four year post-doctoral fellowship in the Department of Respiratory Medicine in Stanford University in California. Professor Burkes doctoral thesis is in the physiology of the transplanted lung. He has published over one hundred peer reviewed international publications and made over 300 presentations to international societies including the British Thoracic Society, American College of Chest Physicians and American Thoracic Society. Professor Burke and colleagues published the original description of the mechanism of human lung allograft rejection and more recently the original description of an altered microbiome in asthma. He has supervised 12 post-doctoral theses to date and organised post-doctoral exchange programmes with Stanford University, the University of London and currently Imperial College in London. He served three terms on the Council of RCPI (including Vice-Presidency) and the Health Research Board. Professor Burkes current research interests centre on the physiology and microbiome of the asthmatic airway.
